WHEN: 11 a.m.-1 p.m. (EDT), July 30, 2025
WHERE: 365 Shepherd Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11208
WHO:
- Karen Ford, Chief Executive Officer, HousingPlus
- Teg Sethi, Principal, Spatial Equity
- Julia Salazar, New York State Senator
- Sandy Nurse, New York City Council Member, 37th Council District
- Kim Council, Deputy Brooklyn Borough President
WHY:
HousingPlus will open the doors to its first housing facility co-developed with Spatial Equity. The building represents a continued effort by HousingPlus and Spatial Equity directly facilitate moving women and their families from the NYC shelter system into permanent homes and to alleviate the extremely limited stock of housing for low-income New Yorkers.
The building at 365 Shepherd Avenue provides 123 units of affordable housing in East New York, Brooklyn; more than half of these units are set aside for women currently living in New York City shelters or otherwise experiencing homelessness.
HousingPlus provides not only apartments for people who have formerly experienced homelessness but also supportive services that provide the essential tools needed to ensure that tenants remain stably housed long-term, including education and employment services.
As a co-developed partnership project between HousingPlus and Spatial Equity, 365 Shepherd Avenue was designed with the needs of people who have formerly experienced homelessness in mind. It includes space for offices of HousingPlus staff members, a computer lab, a meditation/spiritual observation room, two community rooms, bike storage, a community garden, and outdoor gathering spaces.
As of beginning of July, 2025, 68 of the 74 earmarked units are filled, with many referrals coming from our Justice Works program, which provides transitional housing services for justice-involved women and gender-expansive people.
The apartment building at 365 Shepherd Avenue will be followed by a similar co-developed project on Van Sinderen Avenue, where Spatial Equity is expected to be broken in early 2026.
